How to Measure a Room for Flooring

Accurate flooring estimates begin with a sketch and a separate area calculation for every part of the floor. The basic formula is simple, but closets, alcoves, L-shaped rooms, and mixed feet-and-inches measurements are where projects are often undercounted.

What to record before calculating

Use a tape measure, pencil, and a simple overhead sketch. Label each wall and note doorways, closets, alcoves, columns, cabinets, and any area that will not receive flooring. Measure to the finished boundaries of the floor area, not just to baseboards or furniture.

Record dimensions without rounding them down. A room that is 11 feet 11 inches long is not an 11-foot room. If opposite walls differ, use the longest and widest measurements for a preliminary rectangular estimate, or split the space into smaller shapes when that gives a clearer representation.

Rectangular rooms

For a rectangle, multiply length by width:

Area = length × width

A 12-foot by 10-foot room has an area of:

12 ft × 10 ft = 120 sq ft

Length and width must use the same unit. Multiplying feet by feet produces square feet; multiplying meters by meters produces square meters.

Working with feet and inches

Convert inches to a fraction of a foot before multiplying. Divide the inches by 12, then add the result to the whole feet.

6 ft 3 in 6 + 3 ÷ 12 = 6.25 ft
10 ft 8 in 10 + 8 ÷ 12 = 10⅔ ft (10.666… ft)
12 ft 6 in 12 + 6 ÷ 12 = 12.5 ft

For a room measuring 12 feet 6 inches by 10 feet 8 inches:

12.5 ft × 10⅔ ft = 133⅓ sq ft (about 133.33 sq ft)

Keep the unrounded decimal during the calculation. Rounding each dimension early can compound the difference across several rooms.

L-shaped rooms

Do not calculate an L-shape as one large rectangle unless the missing corner will also receive flooring. Divide the sketch into non-overlapping rectangles, calculate each one, and add their areas.

Suppose an L-shaped room can be divided into:

The measured flooring area is:

120 sq ft + 20 sq ft = 140 sq ft

There may be more than one correct way to divide the shape. The important checks are that the pieces do not overlap and that they cover the entire floor once.

Closets, alcoves, and small extensions

Measure a closet separately when it will receive the same flooring. Do the same for window bays, fireplace alcoves, pantry floors, and door recesses that sit outside the room’s main rectangle.

For example, a 120-square-foot bedroom with a 2-foot by 6-foot closet has:

120 sq ft + (2 ft × 6 ft) = 132 sq ft

Do not automatically subtract every fixed object. Whether flooring runs under cabinets, islands, vanities, or appliances depends on the project and installation plan. Confirm those boundaries before finalizing the measured area.

Irregular rooms

Break an irregular room into rectangles wherever practical. Triangular sections can be estimated with:

Triangle area = base × perpendicular height ÷ 2

The height must meet the base at a right angle; do not substitute a sloped side for the perpendicular height.

Curved walls require an approximation or a more detailed site measurement. A simple rectangular overestimate can be useful for early budgeting, but it does not replace a layout plan when expensive material, patterned installation, or tight tolerances are involved.

Multiple rooms and one project total

Calculate each room or shape on its own line and add the areas only after checking them. A small table makes omissions and duplicate areas easier to see.

Metric measurements

Measure in meters or centimeters consistently. Convert centimeters to meters by dividing by 100. A room measuring 425 cm by 360 cm is 4.25 m by 3.6 m:

4.25 m × 3.6 m = 15.3 sq m

Do not mix meters and centimeters in one multiplication without converting first. Also avoid converting between metric and Imperial units unless the product information requires it; each conversion adds another opportunity for error.

Add material allowance afterward

The measured area describes the floor. It does not yet account for cuts, layout, damaged pieces, or product-specific requirements. First combine the applicable measured areas, then choose a project-appropriate allowance. The amount varies, so use the flooring allowance guide rather than assuming one percentage is correct for every project.
