How to Calculate Laminate Flooring

A laminate estimate starts with measured floor area and ends with whole cartons. Individual plank dimensions can provide a piece estimate, but the exact carton coverage is the most useful purchasing figure when it is available.

Calculate measured area

For each rectangle:

Area = length × width

Add all applicable rooms, closets, halls, and alcoves using the same laminate. A room measuring 13.5 feet by 12 feet has:

13.5 ft × 12 ft = 162 sq ft

Apply the selected allowance

If the project uses an 8% allowance as an example:

162 × 1.08 = 174.96 sq ft required

Eight percent is an example, not a universal laminate rule. The suitable allowance can differ with room geometry, plank direction, layout, damaged pieces, product instructions, and installer recommendations. FloorsCalc makes the value editable; the allowance guide explains the decision in detail.

Calculate whole cartons

Suppose the exact laminate carton states 23.25 square feet of coverage:

174.96 ÷ 23.25 = 7.525 cartons

Round up to 8 cartons. The purchased coverage is:

8 × 23.25 = 186 sq ft

The 11.04 square feet between required area and purchased coverage is caused by whole-carton rounding.

Optional plank-count calculation

If actual plank dimensions are known, calculate one plank’s area and divide the measured area by it before applying allowance. For a plank measuring 48 inches by 7.5 inches:

1. Convert dimensions: 4 ft × 0.625 ft
2. Plank area: 4 × 0.625 = 2.5 sq ft
3. Planks before allowance: 162 ÷ 2.5 = 64.8
4. With the example 8% value: 64.8 × 1.08 = 69.984
5. Whole-plank estimate: 70 planks

This piece estimate should be checked against the carton’s actual plank count and stated coverage. Nominal dimensions can make a simple piece-area calculation differ from package information.

Layout and product conditions

The calculation does not determine plank direction, starting-row width, end-joint spacing, transition locations, or whether a cut piece can be reused. Locking edges damaged during cutting or handling can also affect usable pieces.

Patterned or tile-look laminate may have alignment requirements beyond a plain area estimate. Follow the exact product’s installation instructions for layout, expansion space, subfloor conditions, acclimation, and approved accessories.

Carton coverage does not include underlayment, vapor control, trim, transitions, or stair components. Calculate those separately using their product specifications.

Common mistakes

• Leaving connected closets or alcoves out of the area
• Applying allowance to already adjusted retailer quantities
• Using a standard assumed carton size
• Rounding each room up before combining areas
• Rounding fractional cartons down
• Treating nominal plank dimensions as exact package coverage
• Assuming the area estimate resolves stagger and cut reuse
