How to Measure for Carpet
Carpet is cut from a roll, so room area alone does not determine the length to order. A preliminary estimate must consider roll width and the number of strips, or runs, needed to span the room. Final seam placement, direction, pattern matching, and remnant use require a layout plan.
Sketch and measure every space
Draw the rooms, doorways, closets, alcoves, halls, stairs, and transitions that will receive carpet. Record the longest and widest points of each area. Label which dimensions are aligned, because changing carpet direction can change the run plan.

Understand roll width
The roll width is the fixed width of the carpet material selected for the estimate. Use the width available for the exact product. Do not assume every carpet comes in the same width.
In a simplified rectangular plan, orient the room width across the carpet roll and calculate how many parallel runs are needed:
Runs = room width ÷ roll width, rounded up
Material length = runs × room length
Roll material area = material length × roll width
These formulas describe a preliminary strip estimate. They do not optimize seams or reuse remnants.
Example: room narrower than the roll
A room is 10 feet long by 11 feet wide, and the selected roll is 12 feet wide.
- Runs: 11 ÷ 12 = 0.917, rounded up to 1 run
- Material length before allowance: 1 × 10 = 10 linear ft
- Roll material area: 10 × 12 = 120 sq ft
The room itself is 110 square feet, but the rectangular roll cut is 120 square feet because the full roll width is used.
If an entered 5% planning allowance were applied to the estimated length, the result would be 10.5 linear feet. That percentage is only an example; carpet requirements may be governed more directly by seam, direction, and pattern planning.
Example: room wider than the roll
A room is 18 feet long by 15 feet wide, using a 12-foot roll.
- Runs: 15 ÷ 12 = 1.25, rounded up to 2 runs
- Material length: 2 × 18 = 36 linear ft
- Roll material area: 36 × 12 = 432 sq ft
The floor area is only 270 square feet. The simple strip method produces much more roll area because it assumes two full 18-foot runs and does not reuse the offcut from the second run. A professional layout may orient or combine pieces differently when the product and seam rules permit.
Square feet, square yards, and linear length
Carpet quantities may be discussed using several units:
- Square feet and square yards measure area
- Linear feet or yards measure length along a roll
- Roll width must be known to turn linear length into area
One square yard equals nine square feet. Review flooring square feet versus square yards before comparing an area quote with a roll-length estimate.
Why the final requirement may differ
An installer may need to account for:
- Acceptable seam locations and traffic direction
- Carpet pile or visual direction
- Pattern repeat and pattern alignment
- Doorways, closets, halls, and connected rooms
- Stairs and landings
- Irregular walls or angled sections
- Whether remnants can be rotated or reused
- Product-specific seam and installation instructions
A percentage allowance cannot replace these decisions. Patterned carpet can require additional length to align repeats across joined pieces, and the exact requirement comes from the product and layout.
Common mistakes
- Ordering from room square footage alone
- Assuming a roll width without checking the product
- Switching room length and width without considering direction
- Omitting closets, door recesses, or halls
- Treating square yards as linear yards
- Assuming all large offcuts will fit another space
- Using an online strip estimate as an installer-approved seam plan
- Ignoring pattern repeat or pile direction
